The Importance Of Fall Prevention For The Elderly

by | Dec 19, 2019

One of the greatest concerns for the elderly is the risk of falling. When we age, our bones get more brittle and the frequency of hip, arm and leg fractures grows tremendously for those over the age of 65.

Injuries that result from falls in the elderly population can be life threatening and even fatal at times. The complications that occur because of these falls can last for many years.

When someone you love suffers from a fall, they can get themselves into a dangerous cycle, because often the injury is not only physical, but can be emotional as well.

When they fall, they oftentimes will lose their confidence. This sometimes causes them to limit their activities. These activities may be ones that bring them a great deal of enjoyment and some exercise as well. Without this, they can become depressed, and they can lose strength, balance and coordination. When this happens to those you are caring for, they can be even more susceptible to falls.

There are many factors that can lead to a higher risk of falling. Some of them include:

  • A loss of hearing or vision.
  • Weak, stiff and/or painful joints
  • Dizziness
  • Medical conditions such as high or low blood pressure, osteoporosis, arthritis, heart disease, dementia or Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s disease, lung disease, seizure & strokes.
  • Alcohol use
  • Medications

In caring for the elderly, it’s important to provide an environment that is comfortable and relaxed. Seniors who are upset, anxious and/or feeling stressed or rushed are at a higher risk of falling.

Remember that vision is a very important part of avoiding falls. If your loved one wears glasses, make sure that if they are not being worn that they are always in close reach to them. When they are in bed, it’s important to keep the glasses on the nightstand.

Exercise and activity is another important facet of helping your loved ones to avoid falls. When they are in better fitness, they will have better strength, balance and coordination which will help them to keep from falling if they trip or stumble.

An attention to detail when it comes to fall prevention can be both life-changing and lifesaving for those seniors you love.
